Fort Denison is one of Sydney's oldest landmarks. During the early years of Sydney Fort Dension was just a small island in the middle of Sydney Harbour. This small island was called "pinchgut". The island was used to display the corps of people who were hung for committing petty crimes. It was thought when they hung corps from the top of the hill it would deter people from commiting crime.
Years later the hill was flatened and Fort Denison was built as we see it today. Fort Dension was built as a gaol to house the Sydney Convicts with two massive canons looking down Sydney Harbour towards the heads protect Sydney from any ships attacking Sydney. During construction of Fort Denison the two massive canons were craned into place and the fort was constructed. Many years later they went remove the two canons and found that there was no way to remove the canons, so the canons have remained where they laid.
During the war, a single maned submarine entered Sydney harbour and fired a torpedo which hit the Fort and cracked the fort. The crack can still be seen today.
Fort Denison is one of Sydney's premium venues to view Sydney New Years Eve Fireworks.
